Lavender is one of my favorite fragrances. It’s always a go-to when choosing floral-scented body sprays, soaps, and scented oils. I find the smell of lavender soothing and earthy – and in the garden, its vibrant purple flowers are unforgettable. But as much as I love lavender, I’ve never grown it. That’s why I’m super excited to add the fragrant Lavender Phenomenal to Mocha Gardens this year – yet another fantastic swag gift from one of the Garden Blogger’s Fling sponsors!
What’s so phenomenal about this lavender?
Heat and humidity tolerant
Lavender Phenomenal is a new cultivar named a 2013 ‘Must Grow Perennial” by Better Homes & Gardens. It’s an extremely hardy variety that doesn’t die back in winter like other varieties. Phenomenal also tolerates heat and humidity well, which is a win-win for any plant growing in my North Carolina garden.
Even in urban and suburban settings, deer can be a problem. Local deforestation has deer roaming all over my neighborhood. Unfortunately, they seem to really enjoy foraging in my backyard. That’s why I have a 5-foot fence surrounding my raised bed vegetable garden. However, most of my flower gardens are placed outside the fenced area, so anything I plant there has to be deer-proof. And luckily, Lavender Phenomenal is!
Phenomenal is a mounding perennial that will be perfect as a low hedge (which is how I’ve planted it) or as a container plant on a patio. It requires full sun and blooms spring through summer. It’s an easy plant to grow in an urban garden, especially since it is resistant to root and foliar diseases like mildew. You’ll need to grow Phenomenal in soil with good drainage for the best results.
Growing my own lavender is going to be a sensory experience. I can’t wait for the first blooms to appear! I know they are going to be a delight to see and smell.
See you in the garden!
